Greetings unto the populace of the East Kingdom!  The hens of Stonemarche have laid eggs aplenty, and the mead from Giggleswick flows freely.  The time has come to celebrate our abundance with the Stonemarche Baronial Yule.

A sumptuous dayboard shall be provided!  We will be holding our Baronial A&S Championship, as well as our Baronial Fencing Championship.  Artisans and fencers from all neighboring regions are welcome to compete, or just come to display and have fun.  Fencing and A&S competition information is listed below.

Artisans not wishing to compete in the baronial championship are encouraged to bring items to display.  See below for class schedule and descriptions.

This year's Yule will include a SCAdian twist on the Yankee swap!  Please bring a gift (wrapped, please) that you think a fellow SCAdian would like to have - be it feast gear, books, or a grab bag of leather or fabric, etc.  Hilarity shall ensue as gifts are revealed and swapped.  Please direct your questions on this swap to Theo of Stonemarche (255370@members.eastkingdom.org).

Intro to Illumination by Master Harold von Auerbach
The Introduction to Illumination class will demonstrate the basics of doing an illuminated capital plus 2 easy styles of borders that can accompany the initial to create a medieval looking scroll.
There will be a handout.  Class limit is 15 people

Pick-up weaving by Mistress Aine
Including designing, warping, and weaving.  With a pre-warped example to practice on.  (I only have one so people have to share).

Four Rings Class by Mentor Roibeard MacNeill
Learn the simple techniques on how to make four ancient rings styles spanning from the Bronze Age to the Medieval period with nothing more than wire and pliers.  A class for every level and age.

Merrye Mumming by Eseld
Mumming, caroling, wassailing -- whatever you call it, the Yuletide tradition of roving performance is a delightful way to welcome the season.  Come join our first annual Baronial Mummers' Parade!  Bring masks, props, and instruments of all kinds, and we'll combine them into a raucous processional for Their Excellencies.  No experience needed, just enthusiasm.

Intro to Calligraphy by Lady Caitriona
This class is geared to those who have always thought 'I could never do that' or think they can't do calligraphy because their handwriting is bad.  We will be starting with the basics:  paper selection, many different pen & ink options, thin vs thick lines and everything in between.  We'll look at examples of different types of period calligraphy hands and then we will start with hands on (pen on paper) practice.  You will leave with resources, stuff to practice with, and a New-Found inspiration and sense of 'Yes!  I really could be a Scribe!'

Round and Round We Go by Freiherrin Solveig Bjarnardottir
Do you like singing? Do you miss making music with other people but don't read music? That's ok!  Come bring your voice and let's sing some rounds.  No skill level required, just a passion for singing.  Solveig will teach each of the rounds and will provide

Baronial Fencing Championship
Hosted by Bo of Malagentia, Baron's champion of fence, and Nickolai Teppelin, Baroness's champion of fence

We will be running a round robin tournament, where each fighter will face off against one another in single combat.
Once the first round is complete, the four fencers with the best overall records will fight in a single elimination semi-final round.

After the semi-finals, the last two combatants will participate in a best of five fight with rotating weapons forms to decide the new Baron’s Champion.
Fighting will take place on a board running between the two masts of a great ship.  Fencers will need to watch their footing as they navigate their own crow’s nest and the planks connecting them.

In addition to the tournament, we’ll be playing a game!  Each combatant and member of the audience will be given 5 tokens to start the game.  During each fight of the tournament, those that are not engaged in combat will be given the opportunity to wager their tokens against the house with predetermined odds.

At the end of the tournament, after the new Baron’s Champion is named, the participant with the greatest number of tokens will be given a separate prize.

Baronial Arts and Sciences Championship

Our current champion, Eseld has presented the theme of "corpus" for this year's competition.  This can be interpreted as something relating either to the physical body, presenting a body of work, or anything else your creativity imagines!  If you're not sure if your project fits the theme, please feel free to email me at baroness@stonemarche.eastkingdom.org.  And if you have a project that you've been working on for this competition that doesn't fit the theme - bring it anyway!  We still want to see your art :).

Here's how the judging will work:  Baron Gerhardt, myself, and one or two additional judges will talk to each artisan about their work.  We'll be using the Basic A&S Scoresheets to help us examine your work, which can be found here:

A note for total transparency:  while we're using the scoresheets in our judging, the highest score does not necessarily determine the winner (that might even be a separate prize, depending on how things pan out!).
