Event details

The Barony of Ruantallan invites one and all to join us in celebration of Twelfth Night!

As the old year passes and the new year dawns, we gather in warmth and fellowship to share in feasting, merriment, and the noble pursuits of our Society.

Throughout the day, artisans and scholars are called to display their works in the Baronial Arts and Sciences Competition, while voices shall rise in song, story, and poetry during the Baronial Bardic Competition.  Sweet and savory delights will tempt the palate in the ever-delightful Queen of Tarts contest, and Their Excellencies of Ruantallan shall hold court to recognize the talents and service of their people.

The evening will close with a splendid feast, that all may dine together in joy and good company.

Come, friends, and join us as we cast off the chill of winter with laughter, artistry, song, and celebration in our fair Barony.

Greetings to our fair Barony from your current Bardic Champion, Magnus!

This year, at our annual Twelfth Night celebration, we will hold a bardic tournament to find my successor.
The theme I have chosen is Storytelling.

We seek the word-weavers and world-builders of our populace.
Do you have a tale of the hunt?
A story of battle?
A comedic piece—perhaps even at your own expense?

These are the kinds of stories we hope to hear.

Bonus points will be awarded if your entry weaves in Their Excellencies’ theme of Isolation from the past year.

Please send a missive ahead of time, or sign up on the day of the tournament.

We look forward to hearing your tales.

Yours in Service,
Magnus Edmundson

Greetings to all within the Barony of Ruantallan
I am Isa, your current Baronial Arts and Sciences Champion, and I’m delighted to share the details for our next A&S Championship.  It will be held at 12th Night on January 10th, 2026.

This year’s theme is “Medieval Peoples Across the Globe.” Entrants are invited to recreate an aspect of daily life—culture, clothing, pastimes, or technology—from any pre-17th century society.

Rules for Entry

Participants must reside within the borders of the Barony of Ruantallan at the time of the competition (Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, Canada).
Entries must be an object or series of objects that reflect everyday life for an SCA persona during the Medieval period.
All work must be made by the entrant, but it does not need to be created specifically for this competition.  Any suitable project that has not been previously entered in an SCA A&S contest is welcome.
Documentation may be submitted in written or video format.
Documentation should explain how the entry relates to the entrant’s persona, including time and place.
Written documentation should be no more than 5 pages (excluding photos, references, and appendices).
Video documentation should be up to 10 minutes long, with clear audio and a standard file format.  Video entries must also include a brief written overview for those visiting the display.
Judging will follow the East Kingdom A&S Rubric for General Entries.
Documentation must be submitted by January 5th.
Please email submissions to Lady Delyth at jostreet909@gmail.com.

Everyone is welcome to participate—especially newcomers!  We look forward to seeing your creativity and inspiration.

‘Pies with Persona’ - Queen of Tarts Rules
The competition to be declared the Ruantallan Queen of Tarts for the next year will be held at Twelfth Night.
Entrants are requested to make a Pie, Pasty, Tart etc.  (any pastry-encased food, sweet or savoury) with a ‘period persona’… match your pie to a picture, quote etc.  You do not have to supply documentation or follow a period recipe, but pies should be inspired by a pre-C17th reference from any culture.
For instance, your pie’s persona may be inspired by an image like the one below, or by a reference in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet to “dates & quinces in the pastry”.  Of course, your pie may have a period recipe as its inspiration, or even a period reference to your combination of filling ingredients.
Judging will be based on the tastiness and artistic merit of eligible pastry-encased items, with a bonus point if you make the judges laugh.  Bakers of all ages and skill levels are encouraged to enter!
To enter, simply bring your pie to Ruantallan 12th Night on January 10th, with a copy of your source and preferably a list of ingredients.  For more information or to give advance notice of your entry please contact the current Queen of Tarts, Dame Isobel Mowbray, at georginaisobel@yahoo.ca.
