Event Last Modified: November 8th, 2024
Event details
Come and join us at the Northern Lights A&S Competition. Witness the beautiful results that will be on display. It is hoped that something new will inspire another interest for all those attending. In addition, we are planning to have several activities for the children. If any martials are available, there is plenty of space outside for pick up in all the martial activities. The Competition will be displayed in the Feast Hall, however random teaching circles that may wish to occur can be accommodated in other areas if needed. There is hope to have at least one bardic circle one of the evenings. Or possibly dancing! Please contact the Event Steward for more details if one wishes to set up any of these possibilities.
Her Excellency Lyanna of Kernough, founding Baroness of Ruantallan, has graciously agreed to the head the kitchen and provide a wondrous feast on Saturday. There will be a Dayboard provided on Saturday, which is included in the site fee, plus for those staying the weekend, breakfasts on Saturday and Sunday may be purchased in addition to the feast.
The site boasts five double cabins, with sixteen single bunk beds per side, and an attached modern washroom between. The cabins are unheated, but there are plenty of plugs for space heaters and CPAP machines.
There is also generous space to camp in tents should attendees wish to do so. No open fires are permitted on the grounds. Also, the site is equipped with six indoor showers and toilets.
If your household wishes to be bunked in a cabin together, please include who you wish to be cabin sharing with on the google doc's form at the time of your reservation. The site is a church camp and thereby very discreetly damp.
There will be a designated smoking area with containers for discarding garbage. Please be respectful of the property and use the provided area and containers.
**UPDATE (Nov. 8/24)** Arts & Science Registration is now open!!
Northern Lights A&S Competition
It has been 14 years since participation in the Northern Lights Arts & Science Competition has been offered. There have been some changes in how A&S Competitions are now judged, specifically the introduction of the Rubrics. Thus, those who have attended previous Northern Lights Competitions might find some noticeable differences. So, prepare your supplies and settle in these winter months to work on your projects to show proudly at the Renewed Northern Lights Arts & Science Competition.
One change is in the categories of entry. There will be five categories to choose from:
Fiber, Fabric, & Leather
Food & Non-Alcoholic Consumable
Metal, Glass, Clay, & Wood
Paper & Ink
Performing Arts
However, in the registration form, there is a place provided to note more details on the entry. This will aid in finding individuals to provide feedback.
A&S Display
It is understood that there are many talented individuals who do not wish to compete with others, and undergo scrutiny and judgement. It is hoped that they would still share their work and knowledge in an A&S display and help plant the seed for others to try something new. Seeing the wonderful work of others as well as talking with them have inspired many gentles to endeavor the craft themselves. The populace will be asked to decide which entry planted a seed for them.
Sown Seed Challenge
For now, the Pentathlon from the last few Northern Lights events will not be offered. However, in its place is the Sown Seed Challenge. This challenge is for those gentles who have found themselves with a new Seed of knowledge beginning to sprout. The seed has been sown but has not yet produced any finished product, just a lot of research and the start of the seedling. This challenge encourages displaying and showing your Work in Progress, and the sharing and spreading of this seed in the hopes that it will take root in others.
Deadline for entry into any of the A&S displays is June 1, 2025.
