Event details

You are cordially invited to the Fourth Annual Malagentian Outdoor Test Kitchen and Third Annual Northern Chef Competition.  This event is designed to be a welcoming, low-stress event that focuses on food and fellowship.  This will be another collaboration between the Forest Court of Malagentia and the newly rekindled Cook’s Guild!  Curious about cooking over open fire? Here is your chance to do some experimenting!  Pick a dish, dig into the recipe.  Then get the materials and bring them to this event.

This event is being held at Bradbury Mountain State Park in Pownal, Maine, about 30 minutes north of Portland and just outside of Freeport.

You are responsible for your own recipes, ingredients, and gear.  Firewood is for sale at the site.  Please do not bring any out of state firewood, as there are numerous ‘do not transport’ orders in Maine due to invasive pests.

The campsites are laid out in close proximity to each other, ideal for wandering between sites and learning from each other and the depth of skill that our participants have worked so hard to achieve!  Everyone is encouraged to bring copies of recipes, directions, and research, so they can be shared around.

There will not be a formal class schedule.  But we have a wealth of folks that are willing to support participants that are interested in fire starting / fire building instruction, and a few point people that will demo period food and cooking techniques.  The cooking and experimental activities will last through the morning/afternoon.  There will be a brief Forest Court in the afternoon.  Early evening, we will join together for a voluntary potluck feast to celebrate the day’s efforts and award the title of the next Northern Chef!  Sunday morning will feature a garbed hike up Bradbury Mountain and possibly a bit of fencing at the top.

You are encouraged to camp overnight Saturday, but day-tripping is also fine (you are also welcome to camp Friday night, unofficially).  The site features excellent tree coverage, so even if weather isn’t optimal, the site is pleasant.

The overall goal continues to be to help people get some outdoor, fire-pit cooking skills that they can use at other events.  The site will be open to the public, and we often have interested folks checking us out.

More information on the Northern Chef Competition will be shared soon!

Site Opens: 9am Saturday
