Update - Event is cancelled.
Dear East Kingdom – It is with heavy hearts that we must announce the decision to cancel King’s and Queen’s Rapier Champs at this time.  This decision was necessitated by the current COVID-19 surge.  We will be reaching out to those who have pre-registered in the near future regarding the reimbursement process.
Please – stay safe, and we look forward to the day when we can meet again.

Event attendance:
King's & Queen's Rapier Championship event on February 12 has officially reached attendance cap.
We are starting a waiting list, if you would like to be added please email and include the number of people that would be in your party.  Thank you!

Dear East Kingdom,
The organizers of the 2022 King’s and Queen’s Rapier Champions would like to thank you for your amazing response, support and pre-registration.  We are currently at roughly 150 pre-registrations for the Feb.  12 event.
Unfortunately, we remain concerned with the continued and evolving challenges posed by the COVID-19 variants.
Given the site capacity, its indoor nature (in February), current COVID circumstances in Maine and the region and the most recent projections, the event organizers are now capping this event at 250 participants.  We will also maintain a ‘stand-by’ list for those gentles who would like to attend, should cancellations occur.
We would ask that fencers who wish to participate please register immediately.  ( )
We will announce when the cap is reached, along with instructions for how to be added to the ‘stand-by list’
The organizers very much appreciate the understanding and support of the EK populace given the challenging environment we all find ourselves in.  We will continue to do our absolute best in keeping all participants safe and well, following state, EK and SCA guidance and policies.

Thank you,
Colonel Christian Woolfe

Tournament format information:
Hello, East Kingdom Fencers!  It's time to start looking forward to King's and Queen's Rapier Champions so after discussion with their Majesties and the Queen's Champion, here's what the basic format for the tournament will be for the day, along with some tournament conventions to clarify how things will be run.  The autocrat is in the process of getting the event webpage updated with this information, but I wanted to get it out to folks sooner rather than later, so I'll just flood your inboxes now.  Feel free to forward this around.

As an aside, if anyone would like to show up and marshal, please let me know (Offlist, please!-email below) and I'll add you to my roster.  We need marshals!

The overall structure of the day will consist of the perennial favorite of round robin pools followed by a 16 person double elimination tournament, followed by a set of finals with rotating weapons.  For tournament conventions and details for each part, read on!

General Conventions
• This tournament is heavy rapier default.  Light rapier may not be used.
• C&T may be used if both combatants choose to do so.  You must tell the marshal before you begin the bout.  As a note, if someone doesn't want to fight C&T, don't pressure them.  Also, be cognizant of delays that armoring up might cause.
• Spears are legal and may be used!  However, to paraphrase the rules, spear is a nonstandard weapon form and your opponent can decide not to fight against it with no penalty.  If so, you must choose another weapon form.  Similar to asking about C&T, if someone says they don't want to face a spear, don't complain or push back against it.  If I hear about this behavior, I will take an extremely dim view of your continued participation in the tournament.
• All double kills are to be refought until a clear victor is found.
• Barring safety issues, there will be no recentering.  If you are on the ropes or in a corner, we expect that you wanted to be there or have been placed there by your opponent and you will need to deal with that.
o Holds will not be called if you reach the ropes.  If you cross them, tangle in them, or otherwise create a hazard, a hold will be called and you will be placed on the rope for the bout to continue.
o If you are on the ropes and continually creating a safety issue or causing repeated holds by stepping out, marshals can be expected to take action based on that.
Round Robin Pools
Ideally (space permitting) we'll have 8 pools, so the top two fighters from each pool can advance.  In this portion of the tournament:
• Bring your best form.
• Fights are one and done.
If there are ties to determine who advances, we'll initially resolve them by who beat who.  In other words, if two fencers are tied for second but one beat the other in the pool, that fencer will advance.  If that doesn't work due to some strange edge-case math, we'll have fightoffs to advance.

Sweet 16
The sweet 16 will be a standard double elimination tournament.  In this portion of the tournament:
• Those fighters who remain undefeated should display their prowess with a single sword.  Should you take a loss, you may fight with whatever you see fit.
• Each pairing will be determined by the best of three passes.
Final Four

At this point:
• The bouts fought among the final four combatants may be fought with whatever forms the combatants wish.
• When an undefeated fighter is paired against a fighter with a single loss, the latter needs two wins - that is, they must win two matches, each best two of three passes - to advance.  The undefeated fighter needs to win a single best two of three match.

In the finals, losses are forgiven, and both final combatants start off on even footing.  It will be the best three of five bouts, with rotating non-repeating call and response weapons forms:
• A coin toss will determine which fencer calls their form for the initial bout first.
• Forms that can be chosen by combatants consist of Single Sword, Sword and Dagger, Case, Sword and Rigid Parry, Sword and Non-Rigid Parry, Two-handed Sword (with no secondary), and Spear (with no secondary).
• Forms need not match.
• Double kills are refought for a clean result.  Please parry.

If you have any questions, feel free to get in touch with me!

Thanks, and looking forward to seeing the tournament.
