8th Annual Embroidery Schola (Online)

Hosted by Shire of Quintavia - Quintavia, MA

Event date: February 6th, 2021

Event Last Modified: January 18th, 2021

Event details

We might not have thought a hobby that involves sitting cozily on your couch and working alone would change much in this pandemic, and yet, Embroidery Schola will be different this year even so.  But!  How would you like to attend the Schola, AND sit cozily on your couch? NOW YOU CAN!

Embroidery Schola:  Cozy Edition will be held on Feb 6.  Pull up a warm blankie, adjust your magnifying lens and your super-bright light so they cast unflattering shadows on your face while on camera, and join us!

Naturally, there is a tradeoff for this level of comfort.  In this case, it will mean having to sign up for classes by January 22nd so that we can get any necessary kits mailed to you.  This will also allow you time to plan ahead for supplies, once you know your class schedule.  For classes without limited space or kits that need mailing, you will be able to sign up until and on the day of the event as well.

Sign up process - We are going to try ranked class signup, if there's a class you *MUST* go to, sign up for that class as the first choice, then your next most desired class, and so on.  There are only 2 classes with limited participation, so you will be able to get into most classes, and even choose the day of the event if you so desire.

One of the best parts of Schola has always been the chance to chat among ourselves, which is the one thing we can be sure will work in this format.  (Of course, the other best part is the potluck, alas.)

The main Zoom room will be used for hanging out (like the great room at the event).  Classrooms will be conducted in break out rooms in Zoom, with a moderator in each classroom to help the teachers with questions and tech issues throughout the day.  We are looking for volunteers to be these moderators.

Throughout the whole day, there will also be a Discord server for the event with channels for people to hang out via chat.  Channels will also be set up for class discussions that want to continue after their timeslot.  (How to discord:  https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/360045138571-Beginner-s-Guide-to-Discord we won't officially use the audio/video function as it's pretty terrible, think of this as text chat rooms)

Zoom and Discord links to come in future updates, personalized class schedules will be sent out by January 24th

Class participants do not need to have a camera -- folks are encouraged to spend some “face time” with their fellow embroiders in the main Zoom, and can certainly choose to be seen during classes.  Having a camera would also potentially allow for feedback and troubleshooting during classes, but we do not want to set expectations that this is feasible.  The teachers will do their best, depending on the cooperativeness of technology that day, and their class structure.

As this is the first Eastern Embroidery Schola conducted online, we are not sure if we have answered all your questions in this missive.  Please ask, early and often!
