Glorious Spring has finally arrived after a winter filled with cold and ice and endless snow.

The Barony of Settmour Swamp will frolic in celebration and take on the challenges of the Thirty First Quest for Wit & Wisdom.

QUEST is Settmour Swamp's local camping event and includes competitions to determine the Barony’s champions for heavy weapons fighting, rapier combat, thrown weapons, arts and sciences (A&S) and archery.  There is also an Artisan's row (live displays and hands-on demos), dancing, a bardic circle and of course the QUEST.  This year Lord Peotr has designed a delightful Quest for the Treasures of Timbuktu.

Baron Erec L'Claire and Baroness Jehannine de Flandres, of the Barony of Settmour Swamp, welcome all to join in our weekend-long celebration and to take on the challenges of the QUEST for the Treasures of Timbuktu.

CHILDREN are most welcome, but please supervise your children at all times. Anyone under the age of eighteen must be accompanied to the event by a parent or legal guardian. SCA youth waiver policy will be enforced.

POND:  There is a pond on site, this is not for swimming.

PETS are permitted, and must be kept on a leash at all times.  Certain areas will be off limits to pets.

ALCOHOL POLICY:  No alcoholic beverages may be brought on site.  There will be a site-run bar available, and open until 2:00am. This policy will be strictly enforced by event staff. Anyone in violation of this policy will be removed from the site.  See below for Brewing Contest.

ARTISANS ROW: Offered by Lady Ceara MacKieran
Artisan's Row includes live displays and hands-on demonstrations.  The Artisan’s Row is a particularly wonderful opportunity for Arts and Sciences that are too messy or time-consuming for usual events.  We are especially interested in woodworkers, blacksmiths, dyers, stone carvers, potters and any artisan who would avail themselves of a long weekend out of doors.  Our village-like atmosphere will allow you to demonstrate, teach, and peddle your wares.  Last year we had woodworking, weaving, blacksmithing, cooking and other displays.
Please contact Ceara if you have an artistic skill that you would like to demonstrate.

ARCHERY TOURNAMENT:  Offered by Lord Miles Boweman (the Barony’s current archery champion). Their Excellencies will be holding an Archery tournament at Quest to choose their next Archery Champion. The tournament will consist of shoots that follow the overall theme of Quest.  You need not wish to compete for the title of Champion to shoot. Archers of all ages and experience levels are invited to come out and have fun.

BREWING CONTEST: Offered by Lord Serric der Grimm and Lord Pippin a Bhethir.  All brewing contest entries are to be presented to Troll upon arrival on site and must be kept behind the bar until the contest.  Each bottle needs to be accompanied by the name of the item, the category (beer, wine, mead, cordial) and the name of the maker of said libation.
Note:  Any unconsumed brewing entries may be discarded after the competition.
Please contact Lord Serric with any questions.

BARDIC CIRCLE:  Offered by Lily MacRuarie
Tell us a tale, about your best SCA experience, or recite medieval verse, or sing songs, or what have you.

Mithgiladan and Karen (of Carillion) are helping Nadira's family go through Nadira's house and separate out SCA related items.  We are going to offer these items at QUEST with a suggested donation amount.  The donations will be split between Carillion and Settmour Swamp.  There is some SCA-type jewelry, a tent and many other items that need a new home.  Please stop by the memorial with a kind thought for a kind SCA Lady who is no longer with us.  Chose an item and give it a new home.  If you can afford a donation, that would be great and will help the Baronies of Carillion and Settmour Swamp.

ARTS and SCIENCES COMPETITION: Offered by Lady Judith bas Rabbi Mendel (the Barony’s current A&S champion).  The time has come to choose a new baronial champion for Arts and Sciences.
We will be holding two arts and sciences competitions:
1.  Populace Choice
2.  Baronial Champion
All entries for both of these competitions must fall within the years 400-1600 CE.

Populace Choice:  Each member of the Populace attending the event may take a number of beads, depending on office held and baronial awards received.  Members of the Populace are free to distribute their beads in whatever manner they wish.  The artisan who receives the most beads will be the Populace Choice winner.

Baronial Champion:  All entries will be judged by Lord Erec LaClaire and Maitresse Jehannine de Flandres, Baron and Baroness of Settmour Swamp; Mistress Caterina Giaocchini, Settmour Swamp Minister of Arts and Sciences; and Lady Judith bas Rabbi Mendel, current Settmour Swamp Arts and Sciences Champion.

The following questions will be used to evaluate each artisan.  The answers may be given verbally or in writing:
1. WHAT is your entry?
2. WHEN did the entry come from?
3. WHERE did you get the idea to make the entry?
4. HOW did you make the entry?
5. WHY did you use the materials and methods described in HOW?
6. What sources, primary and otherwise, did you use to verify the historicity of the entry?
7. Did you accomplish what you initially set out to do?
8. What problems did you run into along the way and how did you solve them?
9. What role did creativity play in your project?
10. If you did it again, how would you change it? Are there next steps you are planning?

Those submitting a research paper should get them to me by May 15 so we have a chance to read them well.  If you have questions, please contact Lady Judith bas Rabbi Mendel (

RAPIER TOURNAMENT: Offered by Don Orlando Sforza.
The Annual Quest for Wit and Wisdom Rapier Tournament and Baronial Championship
This year, we are romancing the stone; searching for the fabled gems of Timbuktu.
Fencers will be randomly determining with which forms they will fence by drawing a gemstone from a bag.  With the coins earned from the bouts fought, fencers may pay for a redraw or a refight.  The fencer with the most coins at the conclusion of the tournament shall be the winner, and, if able, Baronial Champion.

HURLEY GAME: Offered by Donnan a Bhethir
Hurley will happen!  Gather at the archery field at around 11am Sunday morning to warm up and form teams.  The Hurley game will begin promptly at 11:30 and end at 12:30.  There may also be time for a second game around 3:30 after the QUEST.

SILENT AUCTION: Offered by Baroness Jehannine De Flandres
Donated items will be offered for auction.  Please bring items to contribute to the auction.  Donations will go to the Barony.

The Quest for the Treasures of Timbuktu
Search for the fabled treasure of the lost city of Timbuktu.  Starting in the markets of Marrakesh, assemble all that you need to cross the fiery Sahara desert.  Use your wit, courage, courtesy and bargaining skills to assemble your caravan (remember to get a camel).  Next comes the trackless desert, with fierce nomad raiders and lonely oases.  With good fortune you will reach the city on the far side, what awaits there? Only the winners can tell us!

Each team of questers will contain either three adults or three children.  Children’s teams shall be accompanied by a parent.
