Karin Jacobsdotter has been with the SCA from 2006. She started by merchanting her handcrafted jewelry at Mudthaw and, later, at Quest, Settmour Swamp Events. SCA was so enjoyable that she started going to other events and helping the Barony with various demos and projects. Recently she has been helping with making scrolls and medallions. She just got her AoA at Muthaw (2013), and has been awarded the Bronze Tower and Ivory Tower by Settmour Swamp. She teaches introduction to wire-worked jewelry and basic metal fabrication at scholas and Metalsmiths Symposia. Her interests are metalsmithing, particularly white smithing, embroidery and scrolls. She is a member of the East Kingdom Metalsmiths Guild and Athena's Thimble.
Karin Jacobsdotter was born on Tromøy Island at the end of the 14th century, the daughter of a relatively prosperous farmer/fisherman. Life has been interesting; the Danes and the Swedes have been fighting over control Scandinavia, but more of a threat are the numerous pirates plundering the northern seas. Well, sometimes they give food to the poorer inhabitants of the island.
While Tromøy is warm and fertile compared to most of the Norse lands, it is quiet and rural, and life goes on as it has for the past few centuries. Karin did not care for housekeeping or farming, but she was good with a needle and did most of the family sewing and clothes mending. During the long winter, she helped her father with the mending of farm equipment and the fabrication of silver jewelry. She found this metal work more enjoyable than most of the work avalable to Norse farm women, and became quite skilled at it.
