Wars of Roses XXIII hosts 1st K&Q A&S Champions, K&Q Archery Champions, and an EK War Camp
Words of treason whisper throughout the land. The house of York is once again assembling their forces under the white rose against those who serve the red rose of the house of Lancaster. A call to arms for all combatants, brewers, and bards from both houses to meet on the fields at the Wars of Roses XXIII to determine who will be victorious… Lancaster or York!
Full event information can be found at http://wor.tmmz.net/
Combat:
Combat will take many forms throughout the war. The opportunity of being Baronial Archery, Bardic, Rapier, and Rattan Champions will be determined this weekend.
This year, in addition to the traditional Battle of Bosworth and the Tournament of Roses (listed on Blue Tyger Circuit), we will have the Battle of Ludford Bridge (includes combat archery and siege weapons) and the Battle of Towton (town battle). We will also have the first annual Warwick Torchlight Tourney on Friday night. Many other battles are planned as well.
Our Rapier challenges will include new and interesting bouts such as: Rapiers and Roses (A time limited, space reducing fight), Planks & Plunder (A limited resurrection ship boarding scenario), a single elimination/retained wounds tournament, and a torchlight fencing tourney on Friday night.
Arrows will soar both in battle and on the range. There will be combat archery in at least two battles and ample space to practice, as well as to authorize. On the archery fields there will be Royal Rounds, Clout, Advancing Warrior, Castle Window, and a novelty shoot. This is in addition to the K&Q Archery Champions.
Both novices and experts of Siege Weapons have answered the call to arms at this year's Wars of Roses. The finest examples of East Kingdom Siege Weaponry will be on display. For more information please contact Oskar der Drachen auf Klaagenfurt (Matthew Poehler) (401) 624-2059 oscar@sfrcs-sabis.net.
Baronial Bardic, Archery, Fencing and Heavy weapons Champions:
This year's Baronial Bardic Champions will have a less formal feel than past competitions. It will be based on a Bardic Circle around a campfire (weather permitting) on Saturday Night, with the circle opening to all bards after the competition. Anyone may compete in the Baronial Champions but you must be a Concordian to win. Additional information provided on http://wor.tmmz.net . Individuals may perform in any style that will delight the senses of Our Excellencies.

K&Q Archery Champions:
This year's King and Queen's Archery Tourney will be run by Urho of the Pines, the current Queen of the East's Archery Champion. Held in Concordia of the Snows (on Saturday of the War of the Roses - rain or shine!), the theme will be "Lord of the Rings" and will most likely consist of 2 rounds of 5 (or so) shoots each. Depending upon the number of archers, advancing from first to second round may be limited.
Points for the 2 rounds will then carry over to determine finalists. Finalists will number 8 to 16, depending upon the number of total archers in the tourney. Finalists
will enter a final round of 3 (or so) shoots with the winner having the highest cumulative total FOR THE TOURNAMENT. Archers desiring to shoot the first 2 rounds of the tournament, but who are not willing to assume the role and responsibilities of Queen and King's Champions (1st and 2nd place respectively) for the upcoming year (attending courts, running next years K&Q Tourney, etc) will NOT be allowed to shoot in the final rounds.
Special Note: Archers may use both crossbow and handbow if they wish, BUT they MUST carry both weapons AT ALL TIMES.
There will be NO traditional WAR shoots. (i.e. NO Clout at 100 yards but there will be long range shoots, NO Slot at 30 yards but there might be window type shoots, etc). Current plans are for groups to be sent out at 10AM with new arrivals being cut off by11AM. BE PROMPT! If torrential rain or some other delay forces finals too late in the day, final rounds MAY (although unlikely) be pushed to Sunday morning early. For further information contact Urho of the Pines (Gary Mattson), Queen of the East's Archery Champion urho.alexis@worldnet.att.net
Merchants:
There will be a new merchant camping area near the combat/archery fields. Merchants are encouraged to bring tents that they can sell their wares out of and camp in. Unfortunately, there will be no space in the barn this year for merchanting. There are NO additional merchant fees. Some electricity may be available on a first register, first served basis. Additional fees for electricity may apply. To have your business name and a brief description of your wares printed in the program, you must submit your information by April 1st. For further information or to reserve space please contact Lady S. Tracy (Traci Meiler) (518) 459-0180 anibas@albany.net
Youth Combat:
Youth Combat Activities will follow the Wars of the Roses Combat scenarios, depending on participation. Please contact Draguin atte Maeldun/Ken Kovacs (908) 782-7393 baltasar@nycap.rr.com
Children's Activities:
A large variety of children's activities will be available all weekend. Children's Activities include Banner Making, Triptych Making, Fried Bread Dough, Candle Dipping, Banner Making, Castle building, and Various Outdoor activities. Due to the messy nature of some of the activities, please make sure your children are dressed appropriately. New activities include Kiddy court (a parent cooperative child care) so parents can catch what they need to at court.
Site Amenities:
The site opens at 12:00 noon on Friday, 5/23/03 and closes promptly at 12:00 noon on Monday, 5/26/03. Our on-site amenities include: flush toilets, hot showers, an on-site camp store with coffee, ice and snacks, a barn for classes, dancing and indoor court, and a field solely dedicated to siege weapons for practice and competition. This is a wet site. The bathrooms are handicapped accessible, but please be aware that the site's terrain is rough for wheelchairs and there are no paved roads or paths. We do have local members that manage with asssistance.
Please remember that it is early camping season, weather can be variable. Just like at Pennsic, it can be short sleeve tunic weather during the day and several wool layers at night.
