What is a Waterbearer?People have this notion of women in Greek garb using large water jugs. Or, being in the SCA, a waterbearer is one of the people that pass out that yellow or orange Gatorade and annoy the fighters into drinking. By definition in the SCA, a waterbearer is someone who gives out safe, clean fluids. They are also the eyes and ears of the chirurgeon. They are usually the first neutral parties out on the field that can spot trouble with a fighter. Now, this by no means that they must have first aid training or be a doctor. In fact, unless you are a doctor and have done the tests on people, you do not diagnose anything medical. But every Waterbear should take some kind of Waterbearing class that is offered. Safe, clean fluid means all precautions have been taken to make sure that equipment has been checked and is organism free (ie. No mold or mildew) and considerations are made to see that possible non-contact water bottles or tops are made available. The water is water, without any additions like bleach (yes, this has happened) and Gatorade is made to fighter strength. Waterbears, as well as anyone else on the field, should know the basic rules of the list. This means knowing who owns the list field and who can call the waterbear’s on to the field. They should also know how to approach a fighter properly so not to get hurt by the fighter. Remember last months “Fighter’s Bill of Right’s”? This is especially true for Waterbears. If someone throws water on someone with out his or her permission, that is simple assault. They should also know what some of the basic signs and symptoms for “heat related problems”. This covers a wide spectrum of problems that a lot of fighters face. But it is also unique to our fighters that although they outwardly show the symptoms, it is just their own way of reacting to the fighting situation. Unless you really are a doctor and have done the tests, Waterbears, as well as chirurgeon’s don not diagnose. That is why we encourage all Waterbears to take at least the basic classes. If you can’t carry water for whatever reason, there are always people needed at the filling stations or working with the kids. Both are always in demand. Fruit, pickles, olives and any salty foods can be cut and passed out for the fighters and the populace. You just have to remember to clean up after yourself. And always remember…. This is something fun to do. Waterbearing gets you close to the action without becoming a fighter. I encourage everyone to try it some time. In Service Last modified: October 8, 2004 | ||||
