Event details
Please join the Barony of Settmour Swamp for a day of martial and A&S competitions.  All comers welcome, including those wishing to vie for the title of Baronial Champion!

A dayboard prepared by Charitye Dale will fortify all combatants and artists.

Please find below information on certain competitions, and particularly rules for the A&S event.

1) Armored Combat:  There will be a double elimination tournament, followed by additional events, time permitting.  IMPORTANT NOTE:  Tournament entrants do NOT need to be contending for Baronial champion.  The title will go to the highest finisher who has declared himself or herself in contention.  A separate prize will be awarded to the overall winner of the tournament.

2) Rapier:  There will be a tournament based on multiple bear-pits, followed by additional events, time permitting.  IMPORTANT NOTE:  Tournament entrants do NOT need to be contending for Baronial champion.  The title will go to the highest finisher who has declared himself or herself in contention.  A separate prize will be awarded to the overall winner of the tournament.

3) Archery & Thrown Weapons:  There will be a Champion Themed novelty shoot to determine the new Baronial Champion.  Everyone is welcome to shoot, even if they are not competing for Baronial Champion.  There will be prizes for all rankings as well as for the top score.

4) A&S:  There will be two arts and sciences competitions:  a.  Populace Choice, and b.  Baronial Champion.  All entries for both of these competitions must fall within the range of years 400 CE – 1600 CE.  *Research papers on topics falling within this time period may also be entered.  Please send them to galefridus@optimum.net by no later than Sunday 10/13.  Papers received after that date will not be accepted.* All entrants must be present to win.

Criteria for judging:

Populace Choice:  Each member of the Populace attending the event may take a number of beads, depending on office held and baronial awards received.  Members of the Populace are free to distribute their beads in whatever manner they wish.  The artisan who receives the most beads will be the Populace Choice winner.

Baronial Champion:

All entries will be judged by Lord Erec L’Claire and MaĆ®tresse Jehannine de Flandres, Baron and Baroness of Settmour Swamp; Lady Caterina Giaocchini, Settmour Swamp Minister of Arts and Sceinces; Magister Galefridus Peregrinus, current Settmour Swamp Arts and Sciences Champion.

The following questions will be used to evaluate each artisan:

Ability to explain verbally or in writing –
1.  WHAT is your entry?
2.  HOW did you make the entry?
3.  WHY did you use the materials and methods described in HOW?
4.  WHERE did you get the idea to make the entry?
5.  WHEN did the entry come from? What sources, primary and otherwise, did you use to verify the historicity of the entry?
6.  Did you accomplish what you initially set out to do?
7.  What problems, if any, did you run into along the way and how did you solve them?*
8.  What role did creativity play in your project?*

*Questions 7 and 8 both have to do with creativity, a skill more easily explained by concrete example.  Suppose that you are attempting to reproduce an exact duplicate of a known item.  You will often need to creatively problem solve to achieve that goal, especially if accurate knowledge of appropriate period techniques has been lost.  For a food and cooking entry, you might have a recipe to use as a starting point, but even that recipe states exact amounts for all the ingredients, you will still need to use your own judgment as to what will work well with the modern versions of the ingredients, what to substitute if a particular ingredient isn't available, and so on.  Or the only sources that you have to work with might be descriptive or qualitative, so you have to imagine from the descriptions what the item was actually like.
