|Winter Nights ||Event date: October 12th, 2013|
|Hosted by Barony of Concordia of the Snows - Cohoes, NY||Event Last Modified: September 13th, 2013|
|Winter is coming.|
Gather with us in the warmth of the long fire to share in stories and songs. Catch up with old friends, meet new ones, share ale-cups and bread.
Winter Nights will feature a new take on an old standard: the performing arts oxhide. This year, we’re focusing on challenges: giving and taking challenges, to help you and others find inspiration in all the things around you.
Full details of the challenge format can be found here (external link to Google docs):
In short: you will be paired randomly against someone else. Each competitor will issue a challenge to the other. Each competitor must attempt to incorporate their opponent's challenge into their performance. Each performer will be judged independently on a scale of 1 -5 in two areas: how well the challenge you gave fits the spirit of the event (encouraging versus limiting), and how well you incorporated the challenge you received. There will also be additional challenges that you can attempt to complete along with your performance; successful completion earns extra points! The goal is to encourage performers to inspire others and allow themselves to be inspired.
In the evening, join our open circle, to watch or perform. All ages and experience levels are welcome – share with us and we will share with you. All pieces should be family-friendly (unless parents approve otherwise), and SCA appropriate (i.e. something that fits into the general mood of an SCA event).
If you wish, you may declare your intent to be considered for the position of Bardic Champion to His Excellency Pierre. Anyone who wishes to be considered is asked to perform pieces that are period or in a period style (or at the very least, that avoid obvious modernisms, so as to maintain the mood), and preferentially in-persona. Speak and act as your persona would, and perform a piece they would know. At the end of the evening, Baron Pierre will select his new bard.
There will be a rolling dayboard that will provide both lunch and dinner.
Note: The site includes a staffed bar. In accordance with New York State Liquor Authority regulations, alcohol must be purchased from the site. You may bring sealed containers of alcohol as gifts, but they may not be opened on-site. If there's something in particular that you would like to have served at the event, contact the autocrat. We may be able to make arrangements with the bar.
